How to Use Parental Controls on Netflix for a Safer Streaming Experience
Netflix has revolutionized the way people watch movies and TV shows. With its vast selection of content, Netflix offers entertainment to everyone in the family. However, its wide selection also means that some content may not be suitable for everyone in the home. That’s why it’s important to use parental controls to ensure that everyone in the house enjoys a safe and secure streaming experience.
With just a few clicks, you can create an age-appropriate and secure streaming experience for everyone in your home. In this article, we’ll discuss how to set up and use parental controls for a secure streaming experience on Netflix.
How to Set Up Parental Controls on Netflix
Netflix has made it easy to keep your family safe while streaming content with the introduction of parental control settings. With just a few clicks, you can create an enjoyable and secure streaming experience for everyone in your home. Here we’ll provide a step-by-step guide to setting up parental controls on Netflix.
Creating Individual Profiles
You can create individual profiles with customized maturity ratings to manage the types of TV shows, movies, and games that kids and other people on your Netflix account can watch or play.
If you don’t have existing profiles yet, here are the steps to create individual profiles.
- Sign in to your Netflix account and go to the Manage Profile page.
- Select Add Profile.
- Type in the desired name for the profile. If you’re creating a profile for kids 12 years and below, tick the Kid box beside the field. This will enable the Netflix Kids experience for that profile.
- Click continue. The new profile will show on the list of profiles on your account.
How to set profile maturity ratings on Netflix
After creating profiles on your Netflix, you can now proceed to set profile maturity ratings for each. Here are the steps.
- Navigate to the Profile & Parental Controls settings of the specific profile you wish to handle.
- Modify the Viewing Restrictions setting.
- Provide your Netflix password when prompted.
- Adjust the maturity rating level for the desired TV shows and movies allowed in that profile.
- Select save to keep the changes.
How to block specific TV shows or movies from individual profiles
Aside from setting the maturity rating level for each profile, you can also block specific titles.
- From a web browser, go to your Account page.
- Go to the Profile & Parental Controls settings for the profile you want to manage.
- Click edit to go to the Viewing Restrictions page and enter your Netflix password when prompted
- Under Title Restrictions, type the name of the TV show or movie and click on the title when it appears.
- Select Save. TV shows and movies listed in red under Title Restrictions can’t be accessed through that profile.
How to Enable Profile Lock?
Now that you’ve set maturity ratings for each profile, you should lock the profiles that you don’t want kids and teens to have access to. Otherwise, they could just use your profile to watch content you don’t want them to see.
Follow the steps below to add a PIN to a profile.
- On a web browser, navigate to the Account page.
- Access the Profile & Parental Controls settings corresponding to the profile you wish to secure.
- Modify the Profile Lock setting and provide your Netflix account password when prompted
- Tick the checkbox to enable the PIN requirement for accessing the selected profile.
- Create a unique 4-digit PIN for the Profile Lock. This PIN will open the profile or play downloaded titles unless you use an unsupported device.
- To enforce the use of a PIN whenever a new profile is added to your account, choose the option to Require PIN to add new profiles.
- Click on Save.
How to see viewing history and device activity
To see the TV shows and movies that have been watched on each profile on your account, do the following steps.
- From a web browser, go to your Account page.
- Open the Profile & Parental Controls settings for the profile you want to see.
- Open Viewing activity.
- If you see a limited list, use the Show More button.
About maturity Ratings on Netflix
Maturity ratings help you make informed viewing choices for you and your family. They are either set by Netflix or by a local standards organization and may vary by region.
Netflix sets maturity ratings by the frequency and impact of mature content in a title, such as the amount of violence, sex, adult language, nudity, or substance use that may be present.
Netflix also provides details on the mature content found within a TV show or movie, if applicable.
Maturity ratings and advisories found on a TV show’s details page reflect the series’ overall or highest maturity level. For TV shows with more than one season, the ratings for the season you’re watching are in the top corner of the screen when first playing the title. These may differ from the show’s overall rating or mature content themes.
